In the Upper Harz, 107 storage ponds belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Harz. Of these, 63 ponds are still in operation today.
Mining in the Harz required a large amount of water throughout the year. Water was therefore collected in the storage ponds to ensure a sufficient supply even in times of low rainfall.
The route passes several mining ponds near Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Along the way, you pass famous mines, ride along ditches and watercourses, and through the beautiful mountain meadows near Buntenbock.
The route is 38 kilometers long. The starting point is the parking lot at the Kaiser Wilhelm II shaft in Clausthal-Zellerfeld.
You ride almost exclusively on forest roads. In some places, the route also goes over narrow forest paths and thick roots. The ride takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.
The route is varied and very well suited for e-bikes.

Directions
From the parking lot at the Kaiser Wilhelm II shaft, you head into the Zellerfeld district, past the Lower Eschenbacher Pond. If there is little water in the pond, you can still see remnants of older dams. There used to be 3 ponds there. Then the dam of the Lower Eschenbacher Pond was raised. Thus, three smaller ponds became one larger pond.
Some highlights of the route are: - the Upper Harz Mining Museum, the oldest technology museum in Germany - the Ottiliae shaft (can be visited on a guided tour) - the Rosenhöfer Radstuben, rooms in the mine where huge water wheels once operated - mining ponds from the 17th century around Buntenbock. Here you pass many ponds, water ditches and watercourses. They supplied the mining area between the Rosenhöfer Radstuben and the Ottiliae shaft with water. The water was used in the mine to drive the water wheels. - The Hirschler Pfauenteich cascades are the last attraction on your route. From there, you return to the Kaiser Wilhelm II shaft in Clausthal-Zellerfeld.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Between Clausthal and Buntenbock, you pass by the duck swamp. A signposted path leads you around the pond to the Innerstesprung. The source of the Innerste is suitable for a break during the bike ride.
