The former Samson silver ore mine is one of Germany's most important mining monuments.
The shaft, which is 810 metres deep in total, is the last of its kind in the Harz Mountains and is still open. Two water wheels and a reversing wheel can be seen above ground. The impressive highlight of a guided tour of the Samson mine is a faithfully reconstructed artificial wheel with a diameter of 12 metres, which is used to drive the "Fahrkunst". Today, the wheel is the last of its kind. It is made of steel cables and is still regularly used today down to a shaft depth of 190 metres.
Since 2010, the Samson Mine has been part of the Upper Harz Water Management System and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Rammelsberg Mine, Goslar Old Town and Upper Harz Water Management System.
The Catharina-Neufang Mine is located opposite the Samson Mine, approx. 80 m away on the other side of the sports field.
Please remember to wear weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes when visiting and walking to the second mine.
