Tip: Activate the audio guide mode in the app. At many points, you will learn exciting details about the Upper Harz Water Management around Sankt Andreasberg.
The hike from the Samson Mine in Sankt Andreasberg to the Oderteich is about 10 kilometers long. It passes through the Upper Harz Water Management, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz.
The channels and ponds of the Upper Harz Water Management were once necessary for providing energy in the mines. The extracted ores had to be brought up. Rainwater that seeped into the mine had to be pumped out of the tunnels. Huge water wheels were responsible for this. They needed a lot of water all year round. The water was collected in the ponds and directed through the channels to the water wheels.
On this hike, you will learn how people around Sankt Andreasberg used water for mining and how water is still used today to generate electricity.
Along the way, you will find various information boards with details about the Upper Harz Water Management.
