In the Harz National Park, formerly managed forests are turning into natural and structurally rich forests with different tree species in various age stages. Windthrow, insect infestation, and the natural death of trees are opportunities for a new, near-natural forest. Wilderness is returning.
The WaldWandelWeg at Schubenstein near Torfhaus shows on 180 meters length with short information panels what the Harz forest of the future could look like. The starting point is the National Park Visitor Center TorfHaus. From there, the WaldWandelWeg is easily reachable as a nature experience trail in about 1.5 km. The path to the WaldWandelWeg is suitable for strollers, the 180-meter-long WaldWandelWeg itself is not. However, there is the possibility to leave the stroller there.
Please note that the experience stations are dismantled in winter.
