Hike through a unique landscape in the Harz – the Heers forest area

Set in fragrant pine forests that resemble Brandenburg forests or the Baltic Sea coast more than the Harz, you will find an extraordinary hiking area here. Especially the sandstone caves, photographed thousands of times and about the size of a soccer field, exert a strong attraction on families, mystics, stamp hunters, film crews, romantics, and hikers. It is no coincidence that this place was chosen as the most beautiful stamp point of the “Harzer Wandernadel” in 2009.

Directions

Follow the sign number 6 on the brown blossom leaf. The starting point is the parking lot Regenstein Am Platenberg.

The route starts at the parking lot Regenstein. A visit to the castle and fortress complex before or after the hike is worthwhile. Following the direction signs towards Regenstein mill, you reach it within a few minutes on foot. Follow the traces of the pack mules carved in the sandstone rocks down to the medieval mill complex, which impresses with the reconstructed massive mill wheels. The path continues downhill to the edge of the forest, along which you hike about 1 km. Then a short detour leads to the “Pastorenstein” and about 2.5 km through the shady pine forest to Börnecker station. Here, you have a beautiful view over the Harz foreland and even a train connection to the Blankenburg (Harz) – Halberstadt route. On the wide forest road towards Blankenburg, you reach “Jogi’s forest tavern,” which is open for you on weekends from May to October. Follow the road a short way to the right and walk along the Bundeswehr area back into the forest. The last turnoff towards the sandstone caves takes you directly to one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Harz, a spot with the potential to become a favorite place. Fortunate is the one who still has a picnic in their backpack because it is worth lingering here a little longer. The steep ascent back to the parking lot leads from the main path via the “Grüner Hof,” the former medieval economic courtyard of Regenstein.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A visit to the open-air museum Burg and Fortress Regenstein is highly recommended.

Safety guidelines

The forest area is crossed by many paths. We recommend hiking on the marked main paths because you can easily get lost here due to the similar appearance of the forest.
