Historical circular hiking route Blankenburg (Harz)

Follow the signposting number 5 on the green flower petal. The starting point is the Schnappelberg parking lot at the tourist information.

You start from the tourist information at the Schnappelberg parking lot and go down the Schnappelberg through the roundabout into Herzogstraße towards the train station. You pass the station building and continue along Bahnhofstraße. At the following intersection, turn right into Weinbergstraße. Following this for about 800 m, you reach the forest area after the railway underpass and crossing the A36.

Shortly after the seating area, keep left in the forest. The beautiful, natural path runs roughly parallel to the forest edge through the mixed forest. Shortly before the parking lot, trail number 5 turns right and leads gently uphill towards the Regenstein Castle and fortress. Some stony sections require a bit of concentration.  Soon you will see the castle gate. The stamp box of the Harz hiking badge is located there.

Visiting the open-air museum is recommended here. If you do not want to visit the castle complex, go down the street to the left at the construction trailer and follow the Birkenallee towards the B81. Parallel to the B81, walk on the foot/cycle path to the traffic light junction. Cross the federal road safely at the traffic light and continue on the comfortable, paved foot/cycle path towards Mönchemühlenteich (Attention: turn right at the left curve). The idyllic location of the pond and a snack kiosk invite you to take a break.

Along the ponds lined up one after the other, the circular hiking route leads to the district road, which takes you through the roundabout into the traffic-calmed area to Michaelstein Monastery. The place of silence and music surprises with a modern, multimedia sound and light installation in the historic buildings as well as the fragrant monastery gardens – a highlight of your hike. You will find gastronomy in the immediate vicinity.

The circular hiking route continues through the gatehouse and immediately afterwards sharp left towards Klostergrund. At the stamp box of the Harz hiking badge, let your gaze wander over the ponds before you enter the forest opposite. You are now on part of the “Panorama hiking trail” (No. 3) or the “Herzog route” (No. 1) and the “Harz monastery hiking trail.”

Follow the wide, comfortable gravel path along the Schäferlinde to the railway underpass of the Rübelandbahn. Here, keep left and pass through part of the nicely situated holiday home complex “Am Eichenberg.” The long-distance cycle route R 1 also runs along this path. Once you reach Rübeländer Straße, cross it and go into Wasserweg, which shortly afterwards branches off to the left. At the end, follow Rübeländer Straße for a few hundred meters. Beautiful villas from the Gründerzeit era line the path here. Don’t miss the turn right into the beautiful Welfenstraße. 

You cross the intersecting Harzstraße/Schieferberg and walk up Schlossberg towards Obere Mühle. Enjoy the view and, in summer on weekends, a refreshment on the terrace before you master the ascent to the castle. A look into the courtyard lets you feel the touch of the splendor of courtly times. At this point, the historical circular hiking route leads around the castle and down to the starting point through the castle park.

Take your time and visit the open-air museum Castle and Fortress Regenstein, the Michaelstein monastery complex with its sonorous music exhibition and fragrant gardens. A look into the castle courtyard lets you sense the splendor of past centuries, and a break in the wonderful castle garden rounds off your walk around the town in a very relaxed way. 

This route is also suitable as a cycling route. To avoid the stairs at the railway overpass at the B 81, go directly to the traffic light or, coming from the monastery, follow the road Platenberg straight ahead.

Alternatively, you can start the route from the Michaelstein Monastery parking lot.
