Directions
Follow the Harzklub trail signs the entire way with the destination Kanonenplatz and the associated trail marker "golden royal crown".
Stage 1:
Starting from the location "Haus Am See" we cross a pedestrian bridge towards the castle. We follow the footpath along the northern lakeshore below the castle hill. Here we have a beautiful view of the lake as well as the castle and the church with the bell tower. At the pedestrian crossing we cross the federal road B242 and turn right to go up the path to the castle hill. Here we continue to follow the signs to Kanonenplatz.
We cross the former shooting range of the municipality of Stiege and enter the high forest.
After 2.3 km we reach the federal road B242. The hiking trail follows it for about 1.6 km until we turn left onto a forest road. Now it is only 200 meters to Kanonenplatz.
You will find the reconstruction of a fortification and associated ramparts. At the so-called Franzosenbrunnen (French fountain), a large information board informs you about many historical events.
Stage 2:
If you want to continue hiking to the deserted village Selkenfelde, turn right at Kanonenplatz and walk through a reconstructed fortification, at the end of which another information board stands.
At the end of the hike, you reach Selkenfelde. Here is the source area of the Selke River, which accompanies the famous Selketal Trail. Stamp box no. 55 and a bench with table are situated in a sunny spot directly at the edge of the Selke meadow.
If you want to visit the ruins of the former "Selkirche" church, walk over an approximately 10-meter-long wooden footbridge to a large information board.
Return options:

From Kanonenplatz continue along the "Way of German Emperors and Kings" to Güntersberge; from there take the Harzer Schmalspurbahn back to Stiege.
