Directions

The starting point of the route is located at the car park at the Spiegelsberge.

From there we go up the street to the left to a staircase. We follow this to a path that leads us right to Schwerinsburg.

From there it continues straight ahead to the mausoleum. While Spiegel originally intended the Belvedere as his grave site, he changed his plans at the latest in 1783, when he stipulated in his will that his mortal remains "are to be buried in the burial on the Spiegelsberge" and commissioned the construction of the mausoleum, which was probably completed at the end of 1784, shortly before Spiegel's death in May 1785.

We take the path around the mausoleum and follow it uphill to the terrace of the hunting lodge. From here you have a wonderful view over Halberstadt.

We continue around the hunting lodge. If you like, you can look at the giant wine barrel in the cellar of the castle. However, this is only possible on weekends.

A path leads us to the left of the hunting lodge to the Belvedere tower. Following it further leads to the Eremitage. There is a path through it so you can admire it from all sides.

We now turn sharply right and thus go from Jahnwiese past the former Devil's Bridge to the Bismarck tower. To enter the tower, you can borrow a key for a 20 euro deposit at the ticket booth of the Tiergarten. Please organize this in advance.

Then we hike to the Blankenburger Kopf. This is the highest elevation in the Spiegelsberge. There is also a bench with a table.

Then it goes downhill until we take a short path to the right, at the end of which we turn left onto a new path. However, we do not walk this for long, as we immediately take the next right again.

Now we reach a fork where the apple orchard is to our right and the Volkswiese to our left. This is recognizable by a wooden railing, which was used at the time as a connection point for cattle.

We then continue along the main path through the apple orchards – 0.5 km.

We walk along the forest edge on the left past the Brocken view.

At the end of the orchards, we continue left on the main path and follow the map (no real path available).

We then reach a main path right by the Mehdingschanze.

We follow this further until a fork. This leads left to a gravel path that would take us directly to the visitor tunnel of the Langenstein Zwieberge memorial. However, we stay on the main path and continue straight to the former country house. Today only the ruins are recognizable.

To the left is a steep ascent (stairs with railing) up to the Glass Monk. Once there, you can take a short rest and enjoy the view from the Glass Monk of the Dornstein with Dornsteinfeld as well as a wonderful view over Langenstein. Stamp box available.

We continue right on a path towards the Cold Lookout. On this path, you can admire old stone steps beaten into the ground.

From the Cold Lookout it goes straight ahead to the Fox Cliff. There is also a red stamp box and a seating area that offers a great view.

Next is the Steinkuhlen. This trail goes off the path and is slightly overgrown. It is best to follow the map here to continue to the Steinkuhlen.

When you then reach the hiking trail again, go right along the edge of the hill to the Krähenhüttenfelsen. This is somewhat hidden as it is only accessible by climbing behind the bench.

After that, go right briefly on the main path and then follow a small Thekenberg path to the left. This then leads down to the Thekenberg. Like the Krähenhüttenfelsen, the Thekenberg can only be reached with good climbing skills.

Now go along a trail through old quarries. It is best to follow the map here as well.

Then you reach the main path again at the forest edge of the Thekenberge. Walk straight ahead until a long field path branches off to the right. It is already visible from afar and leads directly to the Klusberge – 2 km.

Once there, you first reach a former airfield. The fence is still recognizable today.

A gravel path branches off to the left of the main path. There is a bench there. You follow this to the Molkenmühlenweg. You walk along the path until a path branches off to the left. On this you keep left and reach the Amsberg, where remnants of the observation tower are still visible, to the Schöne Aussicht.

If you continue straight ahead, the Devil's Pulpit lies in front of you. There you turn right and the Five Finger Rocks lie ahead. Behind, a little further, we reach the Klusfelsen. Stamp point.

We follow the path to the end and then take the left path. There is a barrier, but we can pass it without worries.

At the end of the path, a path runs off to the left along the forest edge of the Klusberge. You reach the Ypsilanti Spring. This spring was once one of the natural sanctuaries of our ancestors. It spurted up to 1 liter per second, so it was quite the size of a stream and was highly revered. Today it has dried up.

After visiting this, we continue on the left branching path. This leads us straight to the pilot memorial if we keep going straight. Along the way, we pass various resting possibilities.

After the pilot memorial, we reach the shooting master’s house, which lies at the roadside.

We follow the road to the former observatory.

Then we turn onto the Höhlenweg and hike to the tennis courts.

Behind the tennis courts, a narrow path runs off to the left. We only go right briefly along it and then immediately take the first left turning path. This leads us to the Pfennig Cave.

We follow this path further above to a horse farm.

From there, we return right to the road and back to the car park.
