This easy hike passes the fishing ponds at Blumenberg, the Sachsenburg ruins, and the Zwergenlöcher up to the Sachsenstein with the Sachsenstein hut. It then goes downhill to the Loren monument and the Historical Gypsum Kiln in Neuhof. From there, the path continues through the Wiesengrund towards the train station. From there, it’s just a short sunny path through the fields to the Mönchslede in Bad Sachsa and back to the starting point via Walkenrieder Straße.

Directions

The start and end point for this easy, approximately 7 km long hike is the parking lot at Friedwald between Bad Sachsa and Walkenried. From here, the route crosses the country road L 604 on the hiking trail marked 32R, passing the beautifully peaceful fishing ponds at Blumenberg. The path then leads to the ruins of Sachsenburg. The exact year of construction of Sachsenburg is not documented, only a first mention in the Hersfeld Annals in 1073. The castle could not have lasted long, at most about 10 years, because it was already demolished in 1074. Starting from Sachsenburg, follow trail 32R further and cross the railway tracks of the Deutsche Bahn – Nordhausen to Göttingen line – at the level crossing created specifically for hikers. Along the Zwergenlöcher, the path gently climbs to the Sachsenstein hut. Here you have a very nice view over the Harz foreland and the Neuhof district. This is also where the first HWN stamp of the current route, with number 166, can be found. From the Sachsenstein hut, continue downhill past the Loren monument and at the community house turn right towards the Historical Gypsum Kiln, the second stamp station of the route with number 192. From now on, the path is almost entirely flat heading towards Bad Sachsa through the Wiesengrund, partly on the Neuhof circular trail number 7, and past the train station. From there, the way back to the starting point goes along the fields and is easy to walk.
