Small circular route through the village of Stiege along the Stieger Lakes directly to the Stieger stave church.

Varied, eventful, and relaxed – the approximately 3.2 km short circular hiking trail leads you through the quaint Harz village of Stiege. Your hike starts directly at Stiege station (Selketalbahn) with Europe’s smallest turnaround loop and leads you past the Upper Pond to the Lower Pond – the well-known Stieger Lake. Romantic and beautiful, and a popular photo motif, is the panoramic view over the lake to Stieger Castle with chapel. With some luck, you can observe the resident white swans and ducks there. Numerous benches invite you to pause. Further through the village, you reach the new location of the Stieger stave church. This was moved from its original location – the Albrecht House – directly to the village between 2020 and 2022 after countless damages from vandalism. In loving detailed work, the extraordinary church in dragon style was dismantled and rebuilt, renovated, and restored.

Directions

Your short hike or walk starts at the parking lot directly at Stieger train station. You follow the signposted Selketal-Stieg behind the bowling alley for a distance of about 850 m. Then you reach a fork in the road and leave the Selketal-Stieg, following the gravel path on the left for another 450 m with a beautiful lake view. At the next intersection, the path leads you about 100 m further along the lake. Then you turn right onto Teichstraße and arrive directly at the lower Stieger Lake. Numerous benches invite you to rest. Along the Stieger Lake, you will experience a magical panorama with views of the lake and Stieger Castle with chapel – a popular photo motif. For the little children, a fenced playground awaits to be discovered. An inn and the castle café invite you to stop by. After your brief stay, you continue walking to the end of the lake. You cross Lange Straße and turn left into Alte Breite Straße, which you follow for about 200 m. There you come to an intersection and turn left into Jahnstraße. After another 200 m, keep left again until you reach Lange Straße. Follow the VIA ROMEA sign on your right until you reach the small Stieger stave church in about 300 m. Rest areas and additional seating facilities invite you to a picnic. On selected dates, by appointment or during events, the church opens its doors. Learn many interesting facts about the church and its relocation to the village of Stiege. Another special feature can be found just a few steps further in the direction of your starting point. A special attraction for railway enthusiasts: Europe’s smallest turnaround loop. It is just 400 m long.
