Experience a unique hike along the Green Belt, which once marked the inner-German border. Dive into history and feel the past up close at the Open-Air Border Museum and the Ring of Remembrance. Hike from the L97 parking lot directly on the Kolonnenweg past the Heiko-Runge Memorial Stone to the Open-Air Border Museum and on to Sorge over a distance of 11 km. Discover the beauty of nature and learn more about Germany's eventful history.

Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, backpack food, sun and rain protection are recommended.

Remember to pack a (mobile) camera, Harzer Wandernadel stamp booklet, and possibly binoculars.

Directions & Parking facilities

- from Wernigerode via B244, turnoff Elbingerode B27 continuing to turnoff Königshütte B242 to Tanne, then to Benneckenstein and via L97 towards Hohegeiß

- from Braunlage via B242, direction Tanne to Benneckenstein and via L97 towards Hohegeiß

- from Nordhausen via B4 to turnoff L98 Benneckenstein, then via L97 towards Hohegeiß

Recommended parking lot: 

- Parking lot L97 between Benneckenstein and Hohegeiß

An alternative entry to the tour is also possible via the Harz village of Sorge.

- Parking lot Ebersbachstraße (follow signs to the parking lot and then follow signs to the Open-Air Border Museum)
Note: Driving on the forest road is strictly prohibited from the parking lot!

- Parking lot: at the Small Border Museum, Köhlerbergstraße (former Sorge train station)

- Parking lot: opposite the Hotel Sonnenhof

All parking lots are free of charge.

You can reach the starting point of the tour at L97 by bus from the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe coming from Wernigerode

Line 265 Wernigerode – Elbingerode – Benneckenstein – Hohegeiß

You have the option to get off in Benneckenstein or Hohegeiß. There is a connection to the tour from each respective stop.

with the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways from Wernigerode or Nordhausen with stops in Benneckenstein or Sorge.
