Experience a unique hike along the Green Belt, which once marked the inner-German border. Immerse yourself in history and feel the past up close at the open-air border museum and the Ring of Remembrance. Hike along the patrol road and back to Sorge on a route of about 9 km. Discover the beauty of nature and learn more about Germany’s eventful history.

Sturdy footwear, functional clothing, packed lunch, sun and rain protection are recommended.

Remember to pack a (mobile) camera, the stamp booklet of the Harz Hiking Pin, and if necessary binoculars.

Directions & Parking facilities

You can reach Sorge by car:

- from the direction of Wernigerode via the B244, turnoff Elbingerode B27, continue to turnoff Königshütte B242 and in Tanne via the B242 towards Braunlage

- from the direction of Braunlage via the B242 towards Tanne

- from the direction of Nordhausen via the B4 to the turnoff L98 Benneckenstein, then towards Tanne and via the B242 towards Braunlage

There are sufficient free parking spaces available in the Harz village of Sorge:

Recommended parking location:

- Ebersbachstraße parking lot (follow the signs to the parking lot and then continue following the signs to the open-air border museum)
Note: Driving on the forest road from the parking lot is strictly prohibited!


Additional parking lots for alternative entry points to the tour:

- Parking lot at the Small Border Museum, Köhlerbergstraße (former Sorge station)

- Parking lot opposite Hotel Sonnenhof

- Parking lot L97 between Benneckenstein and Hohegeiß 

You can reach the Harz village Sorge by bus of the Harz Transport Services:

from the direction of Wernigerode

or

by the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways from Wernigerode or Nordhausen.
