Local history museum Hohegeiß
Learn exciting history about the amazing mountain village Hohegeiß in the Harz mountains!
Our museum of local history is located in the "Alte Pfarre", the oldest house in Hohegeiß.
Already the building reflects the history of the village: It is a half-timbered house, which has been left almost entirely in its original state.
Wide floorboards, an old smokehouse and also the old laundry room are still preserved.
A half-timbered building has been covered with a glass pane during renovation work, so that you can see how it was built at that time.
In the rooms there are furniture and tools from past centuries and in the "Guten Stube" you can even get married in a civil ceremony.
Experience in thematically divided rooms exciting stories about the questions:
- Why did the inner-German border run right along the village?
- How did Hohegeiß come to be founded in 1444?
- What was the importance of mining for copper and iron ores?
- How did the inhabitants earn their living?
- How did tourism begin?
These and many other questions will be answered during your visit or during a guided tour in our museum of local history. We are looking forward to seeing you!
