The Teufelsmauer is without a doubt one of the most spectacular hiking areas in the Harz. Impressive sandstone rock formations rise for several kilometers near Blankenburg, Weddersleben, and Ballenstedt into the landscape. In Blankenburg (Harz), you can climb about 2 km directly on the natural climbing route, a secret tip for all sporty hikers. The small circular route initially leads on a short path along the shady north slope path to the medieval, stone Heidelberg Watchtower and back to Blankenburg on the ridge path.

Directions

Follow the sign number 8 on the blue blossom.

The route starts at the parking lot at the tourist information at Schnappelberg. A small carved devil shows you the way over the motorhome parking area. You cross the B 81 cautiously and walk a few meters into the street opposite, the Heidelberg. Passing the stone stairway, you go under the wooden entrance gate "Teufelsmauer" and follow the path uphill on the north side of the Teufelsmauer. The path, which becomes very narrow in places and passes mostly beech forest, is lined with ferns and moss-covered boulders. Occasionally, gaps in the forest allow views of the Teufelsmauer massif. In summer, hikers enjoy the cooling shade of the deciduous trees. After about 2 km, you reach the "Heidelberg Watchtower," a rock chamber from the 13th century that is said to have served to monitor a trade route or to protect the once medieval village located there. The return route goes back a few meters on the same path and then turns left through a rock passage. On a narrow path, the trail leads right back towards Blankenburg over the Teufelsmauer ridge path to the Großvaterfelsen (Grandfather Rock). The climb up the "Grandfather" rewards the hiker with a beautiful view of Blankenburg and a view of the Harz foreland. From the Harzer Wandernadel stamp box, you take the root-covered path past the Großmutterfelsen (Grandmother Rock) and descend the natural rock steps and stairs to Heidelberg. When you cross the B 81, you reach the starting point of the hike.
