We start our route near the local history museum in Abbenrode, which can be visited free of charge by prior telephone arrangement with the owner. From there, we ride southeast past the village church to the post mill in Abbenrode. The adjacent mill café supplies locals and travelers from Thursday to Sunday with homemade cakes and from Friday to Sunday with breakfast. The products come from regional producers. Afterwards, we follow the K 149 to Destedt. There we cycle along the manor park and Destedt Castle, which is primarily used as a location for celebrations and weddings. We cross the village once and cycle south to Hemkenrode. Here we immediately turn right into Dorfstraße and leave the village by the meadow path. We cycle relaxed straight along the Hemkenroder creek and just before Klein Veltheim turn left at the crossroads. Heading south, we cycle to Veltheim (Ohe), where we emerge near the historic water castle and finally leave the village again via Lucklumer Straße (L 156). Shortly after, we reach Lucklum, where we cycle past the eponymous manor. The café there is worth a break between the old walls. We continue cycling on the country road to the roundabout and take the third exit. We follow the street route to Neuerkerode and turn left into the second street in the village. We ride comfortably south to Volzum, where we take the second street on the right and cycle over wide areas, fields, and beautiful views to Apelnstedt. Here we turn right and make our way north. Along the way, we pass Apelnstedt Mill and cycle onwards to Hötzum. After passing the village, we turn left onto L 625 and continue north. We ride under the A 39 and turn right at the next crossroads towards Klein Schöppenstedt. We do not enter the village but turn left at the hiking car park into the forest and from there cycle through the Buchhorst protected landscape area. We ride along the eastern edge and shortly after crossing the railway line, turn right towards Weddel. We also cross this village and cycle further via field paths and secondary roads to Hordorf. There, we cycle first south before cycling east through the protected landscape area “Schandelaher Wohld and Pfeifengraswiese Wohld.” We head to the Jurameer geopoint Schandelah, where the excavation site gives us much information about significant individual finds from the Jurassic period. From there we head southwest to Schandelah. From there, we follow the paths to Gardessen and then back to Abbenrode, the starting point of our route.
