The approximately 18 km long circular hike leads through the "Grand Canyon" of the Harz in the extensive Natura 2000 area "Bodetal and deciduous forests of the Harz foothills near Thale."

The Harzer-Hexen-Stieg follows the Bode through the impressive rocky valley near Thale. Here, rare habitats such as gorge and slope mixed forests as well as rugged rocky habitats alternate. Brook trout, bullhead, and dipper are native to the clear Bode. In Treseburg, where rafts were still assembled until the second half of the 18th century, the path crosses the river and ascends to the Wilhelmsblick. Parallel to the road, it leads through woodruff-beech forests up to the Roßtrappe junction. Through the ramparts of the Winzenburg, the tour reaches the legendary Roßtrappe. With the chairlift or via the Präsidentenweg, it returns to the starting point of the hike.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The legendary Roßtrappe offers a unique view into the Bodetal. According to legend, the king's daughter Brunhilde was pursued by the Bohemian prince Bodo, who desired her. Only by a daring jump of her horse from the Hexentanzplatz to the Roßtrappe could Brunhilde save herself. Her horse left the still visible horseshoe mark upon landing. However, Bodo fell into the gorge with his horse, where he still guards Brunhilde's crown transformed as a poodle.
