From Lerbach past the Söse reservoir, up over the Acker into the Harz National Park. The Hanskühnenburg invites you to rest before the descent to Sieber.

In Lerbach, now a district of Osterode, begins the 2nd stage of the BaudenSteig. Due to numerous mining sites, Lerbach was often referred to as a "mountain village" in the past, although it lies in the valley. The path leads to the idyllically located Sösestausee. Today, the Sösestausee supplies drinking water to the region around Göttingen and the area around Hanover. Shortly after the reservoir, the path rises. On the heights, on natural paths, it is excellent for hiking. Here in the "Auf dem Acker" area, already in the Harz National Park, there is a beautiful high moor landscape. The ridge consists of Acker-Bruchberg quartzite. This is a very hard rock, so the "Acker" resisted weathering far better than the surroundings and rises to over 800 meters above sea level, guaranteeing wonderful views. The Hanskühnenburg rock announces the nearby mountain hut. From the tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view in good weather. Time for a pleasurable break. By the way, one of the most prominent hikers at the Hanskühnenburg rock was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, although back then there was no rustic mountain hut yet. The goal is near: from here the BaudenSteig leads only downhill to Sieber.

Directions

Start in Lerbach (S) at Hotel Sauerbrey. Briefly follow the main road uphill, then turn right into the "Mühlental" up to the open-air museum (1) (located on the left). Continue straight uphill on a meadow path. In the forest, turn right past a sheep stall, then left. Now hike uphill together with the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg for a while. On a wide forest road to the Königsecke (viewpoint). Past the Rote Sohle to the Eselsplatz (2) (rest area and hut). Now head downhill towards the Sösestausee on a path. Briefly follow the B498 to the right to the parking lot at the dam. Leisurely stroll over the dam – with a magnificent view of the reservoir (3). Then right, past the secondary dam. Left onto a path to a forest road. Here turn left and follow the Apenketal for about 300 m, then turn right. Always uphill on the forest road to the Schindelkopf hut (4) (fireplace/viewpoint). Continue to the "Stern" intersection. Here turn right following the "Nassen Weg" – literally. Good footwear is required. Pass numerous blueberry bushes over roots and stones uphill. At the boundary of the Harz National Park turn left onto the "Ackerfastweg". Continue through the high moor region (5) with breathtaking views (view of the Harz foreland: opposite the Bocksberg and below the Sösestausee pre-reservoir). Soon the Hanskühnenburg is reached (6) (restaurant). This is worth a long break, and be sure to climb the tower beforehand (fantastic panorama). Follow the paved road downhill on the right, past a spring, to a crossroads (additional green dot marking). At km 13.5 (7) leave the asphalt path and follow the gravel path to the left. The wide path leads through tall conifers. At the next crossroads keep slightly left. Downhill in wide curves through beech forest over the "Andreaweg". Above Sieber stay on the wide path, then turn left downhill into the village to the main street (8). To the outdoor pool, the town center, or for overnight stay? You decide. Families with children will enjoy the large and free-access recreational park with adventure playground and almost 50 m long giant slide, a welcome change and an ideal day destination.
