Interesting hike in the Three-Country Corner.

Hike near the mountain village of Hohegeiß in the Three-Country Corner of the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia! This route takes you there partly west, partly east along the former inner-German border.

The return route to Hohegeiß runs through the scenic area between Kunzental and Lampertsberg. So you will not only reach historically interesting places but also the beautiful deciduous forests of the southern Harz, which offer a wonderful sight, especially in spring and autumn.

Directions

From the parking lot, the route runs along a pond and then slightly uphill along the edge of the forest. Follow the signposts for route 8 towards federal road 4 and cross it. Immediately afterwards, you will also cross the former border, of which nothing can be seen here today. The wide path that you then reach is the former column road of the GDR border troops. Follow it to the right up to the “Three-Country Stone”.
Afterwards, walk about 100 m on a former road to federal road 4, on which you turn right and after another 80 m turn left into Kunzental. At this point, the middle of the stream used to form the border. You now follow the hiking trail downhill in Kunzental for just under two kilometers until a forest road branches off to the right leading to the viewpoints Nonnenbank and Mönchsbank. Follow the path and the signposts further and hike uphill to the left on a clearing to Lampertsbergstraße and then back downhill to the parking lot at the forest swimming pool.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The rest area at the Three-Country Stone, as well as the shelter between Nonnen- and Mönchsbank, offer the opportunity to take a break.
And in summer, the forest swimming pool offers the chance to enjoy a refreshing bath after the hike.
