Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg was born in 1797 in Wolfshagen in the Harz. As a master carpenter, he came to Seesen in 1825 to work there.

Here Heinrich Engelhard initially repaired upright pianos on the side until he established himself as an instrument maker in 1836. He specialized in building pianos and emigrated to New York with his family in 1850. There they founded the internationally renowned company Steinway & Sons. The Steinweg family, later Steinway, always maintained contact with their Harz homeland and visited repeatedly. Even today, numerous traces of the family can be found in Wolfshagen in the Harz and in Seesen. Set off on the trail and learn more about the history of the Steinways.

Directions

It starts at the Festhalle Wolfshagen (stamp location). From there, follow Jahnskamp towards the forest edge, past the playground to Burgweg (nature trail). On the pastures along the way, you encounter the Harz upland cattle. After the pavilion “Steep Meadow”, continue via Wittenbergsweg to the “Mandolin Hut” (stamp location). From there, a steep path (400m) leads down to the Innerste reservoir (alternative route via Ochsental). Once on the bike path, keep left towards Lautenthal. At the “Trogtal” bus stop, cross L515 and return to the flood area of the reservoir. Behind the parking lot, the Steinway-Trail turns left again into the forest. Now follows the ascent into the “Small Trogtal”. At “Stiefel” turn right, over Schnapsweg and Schnapsplatz to reach the Tränkebach Hut (stamp location). Downhill, the remains of medieval mining line the trail. Keep left and cross the road after the bridge. The path to Seesen runs right along the course of the Schildau. Crossing the Forellenstieg Bridge brings you back to Lautenthaler Straße / town entrance and to Steinway Park (stamp location). The Municipal Museum Seesen (Wilhelmsplatz 4) has a permanent exhibition about the history of the Steinways. The museum also has a stamp location. (The stamp is optional for the badge as it is only accessible during opening hours.)
