Directions

The starting point of the hike through the Natura 2000 area "Bodetal and deciduous forests of the Harz foothills near Thale" is the cable car station in Thale. On the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, the path leads past Hirschgrund and the Königsruhe guesthouse and into the rugged Bodetal. Across the Teufelsbrücke and after a steep ascent, a fantastic view of the Roßtrappen massif opens up. We follow the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg to Treseburg. Here, the path marked with a yellow triangle branches off and leads up towards Wilhelmsblick. A short detour to the Wilhelmsblick viewpoint is definitely worthwhile. The route follows the path marked with a yellow triangle until the junction of the Kaiserweg on the L 93. The Kaiserweg, marked with a crown symbol, leads from the intersection to the Roßtrappe. The descent to the starting point of the hike takes place via the Präsidentenweg, which leads down by the Berghotel Roßtrappe. The chairlift also runs down into the valley from the Roßtrappe parking lot.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The legendary Roßtrappe offers a unique view into the Bodetal. According to legend, the king's daughter Brunhilde was pursued by the Bohemian prince Bodo, who desired her. Only by a daring jump of her horse from the Hexentanzplatz to the Roßtrappe could Brunhilde save herself. Her horse left the still visible horseshoe mark upon landing. However, Bodo fell into the gorge with his horse, where he still guards Brunhilde's crown transformed as a poodle.
