  • Start: At the Kurhaus in St. Andreasberg
  • Destination: At the Matthias Baude on the summit of Matthias-Schmidt-Berg.

A comfortable route with little elevation gain to the summit of Matthias-Schmidt-Berg above St. Andreasberg, which is equipped with (chair) lifts, downhill and ski slopes, and a toboggan run for summer and winter sports. There is also gastronomy available at the local mountain hut.

The route bends around east of St. Andreasberg, thus avoiding major climbs. Large sections cross the special Upper Harz mountain meadows.

Almost throughout the route, there are repeated extensive and panoramic views over the Harz.

We go from the Kurhaus back to the main road, cross it, keep left, and follow it uphill. After a few meters, we turn right before the gas station, pass the entrance sign of the cross-country ski trail, and follow the path up to Jordanshöhe. After about 400 meters, we turn right at the sign "Zum Hexenstieg".

The path goes over a large meadow with a beautiful view over St. Andreasberg. Several benches invite you to rest.

We reach a road, which we follow uphill to the "Berghotel". Above the hotel, we turn right and continue along the forest edge. Here we again have a wonderful view over St. Andreasberg and the western Harz.

We continue and before a bench take the narrow path through the meadow that leads us to a seating area set up by the Harzklub local branch St. Andreasberg.

We leave the seating area after a possible short break and head toward the road. We are now on a section of the "Höhenwanderweg," which leads 16 kilometers around St. Andreasberg. Again, we can admire the beautiful flower meadows and the magnificent views. After crossing the road, we follow the wide forest path. After about 3 kilometers, we turn right at the sign "Höhenwanderweg" and after 300 meters reach Matthias Schmidt Berg. After another 300 meters, we arrive at the Matthias Baude guesthouse.

The return to town can be reached by several footpaths or by the chairlift that ends up here. As a special highlight, you can crown the tour with a run on the summer toboggan run.

Equipment

The route can be done with simple equipment. If you choose to descend on foot from the mountain summit back into the town at the end of the tour, sturdy footwear is recommended.

Directions & Parking facilities

For access in St. Andreasberg, follow the signs to Kurhaus. It is located fairly centrally in the upper part of town opposite the junction of the state road from Oderhaus or Braunlage.
At the starting point of the tour is the large parking lot "Am Kurhaus".

Close to the starting point is the bus stop on Schützenstr. in St. Andreasberg. The following lines stop here:

-820 from Braunlage and Bad Harzburg (train station)

-840 from Altenau and Clausthal-Zellerfeld (connection from Goslar)

From Bad Lauterberg and Herzberg (train station) the line 450 ends at the central bus station in St. Andreasberg. The tour can also be started from here, adding about 10 minutes walking time. In addition, the direct descent is simplified since the central bus station is better accessible from the summit than the Kurhaus parking lot.

Additional information

In winter with snow cover, the tour can be started on the last section from the state road to Braunlage at Oderberg. Return also from here. A car can be parked at Oderberg.

The enjoyment of the wide winter landscape and watching the winter sports enthusiasts at Matthias-Schmidt-Berg are an experience.
