We start our stage at the marketplace of the historic old town of Wernigerode, commonly called "the colorful town in the Harz." A worthwhile photo subject is the town hall, first mentioned in documents in 1277, which still shines today with its preserved late Gothic half-timbered construction from the 15th century. We pass the Westerntor tower via Westernstraße, cross the Zillierbach, and turn diagonally left opposite into the street "An der Malzmühle." We keep going straight out of town until we reach Schäfergrund via Trift and then turn right into Drängetal Hangweg. We follow this paved forest road continuously southwards through the woods until we meet the Zillierbach again and follow it to Drei Annen Hohne. We ride directly past the station of the Harz narrow-gauge railway. Here is a stop of the popular Brockenbahn, which puffs its way from here up the highest mountain in northern Germany or descends again towards Wernigerode. With some luck, we can watch one of the historic narrow-gauge railways. A detour to the Nature Experience Centre HohneHof about 800 meters away with the Löwenzahn discovery trail and a small café is worthwhile. It offers many opportunities for children and adults to experience, discover, and enjoy nature. We follow the L100 for a bit before crossing the railway tracks and turning left into Sachshäusweg. We follow this until the intersection with Alte Heerstraße. Here we keep left and let the path lead us to Elend, where we cycle along the main road and Braunlager Straße near the well-known wooden church. The church in Elend is Germany’s smallest wooden church, consecrated in 1897, and a popular photo subject. After the short visit, we turn right and follow Alte Braunlager Straße until we reach the B27, which we cross carefully, then turn onto an exciting single trail parallel to the federal road. At the intersection with Kolonnenweg, we pass "Kukkis Erbsensuppe," offered to passers-by and hikers and now known nationwide. Just before Braunlage, we pass the former inner-German border, marked by a memorial to history. Additionally, our narrow trail crosses Grenzweg and shortly after the small river Bremke. We finally reach Braunlage, encounter the B27 again, and end our stage in the town centre near the Warme Bode.
