  • Destination: Ilsenburg National Park Municipality
The tour starts in the Ilsenburg National Park municipality and passes Osterwiek, Hornburg, and Vienenburg before returning to Ilsenburg. The bike trail is 70 km long and suitable for all cyclists.

The tour starts in the city of Ilsenburg, which offers both a natural experience with a well-developed hiking network and culture and history with two Romanesque monasteries on the Romanesque Road. Afterwards, you reach the city of Osterwiek via Veckenstedt and Wasserleben, a 1200-year-old settlement known for the famous Stephaniikirche (circa 1150) and a 4000 ha large landscape protection area (Fallstein). Next, it continues to Hornburg, a city with a thousand-year history and about 400 listed half-timbered houses. From there, it goes via Vienenburg, the city with the oldest still preserved railway station in Germany (1840), to Stapelburg and from there back to Ilsenburg along the former border.

Directions

The Ilse originates at around 800 m altitude on the northern edge of the Brocken; along the Ilse bike trail, you see part of the 40 km long river. The tour starts in the Ilsenburg National Park municipality, at Veckenstedter Weg towards B6 at the town exit. The city offers both landscape and nature experiences in an expanded hiking network (also Harz Border Trail, Hiking on the Green Belt, Harz Monastery Hiking Trail, R1) as well as cultural and historical experiences (Romanesque Road). The Romanesque monasteries Ilsenburg and Drübeck are witnesses to early German kingship. Take a small detour to visit the Veckenstedt ponds. The widely known facility beyond the Harz borders offers trout fishing ponds, carp breeding, a smokehouse, and a fish snack bar as well as animal enclosures and a playground. On the Ilse bike trail lies the Ilsestrandbad Wasserleben – a fully renovated outdoor pool reopened in 1997, particularly popular due to its wind-sheltered location in the Ilse floodplain. The idyllic Wasserleben with numerous fords lies on both sides of the Ilse floodplain.
